Carburetor Installation Instructions

READ THIS FIRST!
The carburetor you are installing is new or has been completely re-built and has been test run on an engine and tuned before being packaged and shipped. The following items must be addressed before installing the carburetors.

These instructions are intended for someone who is experienced in automotive repair and repair safety. Working on any fuel system requires that the engine be cold and to have a fire extinguisher present at all times. The work area must be kept extremely clean as if dirt enters the jet system it will seriously affect the operation of the fuel metering system. Clean all fuel spills immediately to eliminate the chance of a fire.

  1. The vehicles fuel system must be in good condition and clean. Replace fuel hoses and clean or replace all fuel filters in the system.

  2. Fuel pressure MUST BE CHECKED and can be NO MORE THAN 3PSI... This is extremely important, if the fuel pump is allowed to go above 3psi it will cause the engine to flood as the needle and seat and float can not control the fuel entering the carburetor. We also DO NOT RECOMMEND using an electric fuel pump with these carburetors. This is due to the quality of the fuel pumps that are available on the aftermarket, the pumps fuel pressure control is erratic at best and using a fuel pressure regulator with out a dedicated fuel return line is unreliable. The factory fuel pump is the best way to supply the correct fuel volumes and pressure that the carburetors need.

  3. Intake manifold gasket surfaces must be clean and flat, if you have any concerns we have exchange manifold sets available.

  4. The engines internal condition must be in perfect condition, engine leak down should not exceed 15% per cylinder; valve clearances should also be checked and correctly adjusted.

  5. The ignition system must also be in perfect condition. New plugs should be installed and the rest of the system should be thoroughly inspected and adjusted. Worn parts should be replaced with new and the ignition timing and dwell setting accurately set. If you are having trouble with the idle speed setting, 99% of the time the ignition distributor is the problem. Worn parts in the distributor will cause the advance system to start working too early causing the engine to idle high, not return to idle, or stall when returning to idle... If you have any concerns we have exchange distributors on the shelf or you can send us your distributor to be rebuilt.

  6. When checking and adjusting the carburetor balance we recommend using an STE brand synchrometer, (SK or BK models), these synchrometers will not create any restrictions to the air flow of the carburetor unlike the Uni-Syn balancers which if left on the carburetor will cause it to flood the cylinder.

  7. When tuning your engine take your time, make only one change at a time and don’t make big moves. If you are having problems stop what you are doing and make sure that all of the items mentioned above have been verified. If after checking everything again and you are still having trouble please feel free to contacts and we will be happy to walk you though the process.
